Baby clothes are a great way to build your crochet skills.  These small projects allow you to try new things without being overwhelmed.  Also, they are always welcome gifts for a new arrival, and so much more appreciated because you made it yourself.

All patterns are UK terminology unless stated otherwise

Emu 8495  Crochet lacy baby shawls  dk, 4ply, 3ply

Two really nice lacy shawls to crochet in a choice of thicknesses of yarns.  Despite the square patterned shawl looking as if it is made from motifs which are joined up, it is actually worked l in only 2 parts where the second part works into the foundation row of the first part. It is very quick to work.  I love that there is no sewing up!  The lace-edged shawl is also very quick as the centre part has only one pattern row to repeat.  Then you are ready for the satisfying crocheting-on of the edging.  You are recommended to use a 4mm hook, which is fine for the extra soft baby yarn, but if you use regular dk a 4.5mm hook gives a better result.  Of course, you then need to either make fewer stitches in the foundation row or allow extra yarn as it will come out bigger.  There is no chart, but I think an internmediate crocheter who can read a pattern would manage these as they are simple and repetitive once you get going.  The leaflet is old, slightly creased, and clean.  £2.00 and free p+p.

Clipper 441   V-neck cardigan, collared jacket and round neck sweater with shell panels

I made the cardigan in yellow and it looked a lot better than this picture (what a strange choice of colour for baby clothes - maybe I'm just old-fashioned!).  Unusually for crochet, it has raglan shapings but they did not pose any problem as that part of the garment in each case is simply in trebles. There are four double knitting yarn choices given but I don't know if any are still available.  Substitution should be simple - I'm sure I didn't use the recommeded yarn.  The leaflet is in good condition £2.00

Robin 2152   Coat, scarf and helmet with multicolour border

I have made this exactly as in the picture 2 or 3 times and been very pleased with it each time.  It makes a great gift to put aside early as it is equally suitable for a boy or girl.  The scanning process makes yellow streaks in the image, but it is white, with a shell lace pattern and is really cute.  If you can follow a pattern you will be able to do this as it is worked in one piece to armholes and has very little shaping.  Even the little helmet with earflaps is easier than it looks.  A highly recommended pattern.  The leaflet is lightly creased and has punch holes in the side which do not affect the pattern and there is an inkstamp on the back.  £2.00 with free p+p worldwide

Peter Pan P83   Lacy coat and bonnet in 4ply

This pattern comes in 2 sizes, 20 and 22inch (51 and 56cm).  It is simple enough for a new crocheter as the lace pattern goes over only 2 rows and there is very little shaping.  There is a lot of lovely 4ply yarn available so you should have no problem.  I remember using up some spare 3ply and making the smaller size, using the same size hook as recommended, and it came out very well and actually the correct size, although it looked a bit more open in the lace fabric.  The leaflet is in good condition, £2.00.

Lister N2521  Crochet 4-ply matinee coats in 3 sizes

Two very straightforward patterns with only minimal shaping at the armholes and neck.  There are seven options for yarn given in the pattern including wool and acrylic, so although the original yarn may no longer be available there should be no difficulty in finding a suitable yarn.  The three sizes are 18, 20 and 22 inches (46, 51 and 56cms) so it can be made for a toddler and looks good over a summer dress as a cardigan in the summer.  The hook size given is 3.5mm so that the fabric is nice and flexible.  The patterns for each jacket is over a 4 row repeat and I think that although it is not for beginners to crochet, it could be done by someone who is confident in reading and following a pattern.  The leaflet is slightly yellowed with age and slightly creased.  It is £2.00 with free postage

Peter Pan P82   Crochet lacy baby's jacket

A baby dk design in sizes 18/20" chest.  I could only get the tension right when I used quickerknit as it is made on a 3.50mm or 3.00mm hook, depending on the yarn used.  The recommended yarns are no longer available, but baby quickerknit does seem to be a good substitute.  I suggest that this is suitable for crocheters with some experience.  The leaflet from the late '70s or early '80s is in good condition.  £2.00 + FREE post and packing

Sirdar B3456   Crochet baby's striped sweater and pants set

Shoulder buttoning short sleeve top and front buttoning pants in Sirdar Snuggly 4ply.  It is worked on hooks sizez 2.5mm and 3.5mm.  The sizes are 16"-20" (41-46cm) chest.  I know I made this in about 1980 but I have no recollection of how easy or difficult it was so I think that means it was pretty straight forward.  Reading the pattern, I think any one who knows the basics would manage this set.  I do remember that I made it in very bright colours and it looked great and got many admiring comments.  This leaflet is slightly creased but completely usable.  £2.00 + FREE post and packing

Robin 2221   Crochet ridged yoke baby jacket and bonnet

The bonnet and coat of this set are worked in back loops only to make a raised ridge effect with lacy sleeves and body.  Sized for 16" to 20" chest by using 3.00mm, 3.50mm or 4.00mm hooks.  The Robin bri-nylon 3ply yarn is no longer available but any baby 3ply would work.  I made the 18" size and I think that using a smaller hook to make the smallest size might have made the fabric a bit stiff - perhaps 2ply yarn would work for the smallest size. I also did not thread the ribbon in at the yoke as shown and it looked fine.  The leaflet is in good condition with only light creasing.  £2.00 + FREE post and packing

Emu 8372  Crochet lacy baby dress with ruffle front

One of the cutest crochet dresses I have seen for a baby, it has matching pants, too.  This is given in one size for a 20inch chest and is worked in 4ply on a 4mm hook.  I have not made this as I don't know any baby girls of the right age but on reading through the pattern it looks like one for an experienced crocheter.  The leaflet, as you can see, is fairly creased and there is a small biro mark on the back but otherwise it is clean and completely usable. £2.00 and FREE post and packing
